27th April: Church leaders in Kenya have thrown their weight behind the government’s proposal to close down all children’s orphanages nationwide. Under this new initiative, the government aims to reunite children residing in orphanages with their immediate family members, guardians, or relatives. The leaders also claimed there had been cases of child trafficking, something which the leaders noted was quite alarming.

22nd April: Two Kenyan men are appealing for help after they were trafficked to Taiwan on the promise that they would be connected to opportunities allowing them to perform in art shows. According to Taiwanese labour authorities, the two may be victims of a human trafficking syndicate that has been smuggling migrant workers to the country. Kenyan workers have in the recent past been victims of rogue agents who take advantage of desperate persons struggling to secure jobs in their home country.

Human Trafficking Insights and Trends 

More than 70 percent of the global workforce is likely to be exposed to health hazards related to the climate crisis, with migrant workers at particular risk, according to a report published yesterday by the International Labour Organization (ILO). Existing occupational safety and health (OSH) protections are struggling to keep up, and workers in the informal economy, who may lack protections altogether and cannot afford to stop working, face the most peril, the authors say.(Herein Attached: wcms_922850)

A study published last year by Equidem found that workers at the heart of the United Arab Emirates’ renewable and gig sectors had left homes in Africa and Asia because of the climate crisis, only to be subjected to labour abuse including occupational health and safety risks. It emphasized the gap between the need for effective mitigation and adaptation measures to protect workers from climate change hazards and the current response in terms of global OSH protections which, it said, have failed to keep pace with evolving risks.
